Garmin 605/705: Draw a route and go for a ride

Go to http://ridewithgps.com and select Draw a Route from the Add Content menu

Click around on the map to draw out a route.  Additional options and tools are available on the right sidebar.

Save the route and fill out any relevant details.

Wait for it to save and then click "View your route here".

Export as GPS Exchange Format Track.  This file will contain the entire route as drawn, as well as all of the points in the cue sheet displayed on the left side of the map.

Connect your Garmin 605 or 705 to your computer, and place the downloaded GPX file in the Garmin/GPX folder on your Garmin unit.

When you are ready to ride, turn your GPS unit on and do the following:

  1. Press Menu
  2. Push the thumb stick to select "Where To?"
  3. Select "Saved Rides"
  4. Select the route you just created, then select "Navigate" to begin your ride
  5. The easiest way to follow the route is the compass screen (press Mode until you get here), which will point you toward the next waypoint.  It should point straight ahead if you are on course.  When you are approaching an upcoming turn, a map will come up and alert you.
